A Programmable Beam Shaping System for Tailoring the Profile of High Fluence Laser Beams

Summary

Customized spatial light modulators (SLMs) are revolutionizing beam shaping for high-energy fusion-class laser systems. Designed for precision optical control, these modulators are strategically placed in a low-fluence relay plane to introduce programmable beam obscurations, mitigating potential damage from small optical component flaws that could otherwise limit system performance.

This two-stage system employs 1920 × 1080 pixelated liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) modulators to imprint high-resolution images onto 470 nm address beams. These images are then projected onto custom optically-addressable light valves, featuring a single-pixel liquid crystal layer coupled with a photoconductive Bismuth Silicon Oxide (BSO) crystal. This setup dynamically modulates coherent 1053 nm laser beams, ensuring smooth, apodized masking functions without pixelation artifacts.

With valves up to 24 mm × 36 mm, low wavefront distortion (<0.5 waves), and high transmission (>90%), these SLMs offer superior etalon suppression to prevent spectral and temporal ripple. Integrated with flaw inspection and optic registration systems, this cutting-edge technology significantly extends the operational lifespan of high-fluence laser optics.
